The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) says nearly 70,000 people in Afghanistan have so far benefited from its education programs, with women accounting for 73 percent of participants.

UNESCO said on August 11 that its literacy and skills-development programs have provided educational opportunities while also helping families increase their incomes.

The organization said participants’ experiences show that education is not simply about acquiring knowledge. It also plays an important role in protecting the dignity of women and their families and improving their quality of life.
